Legacy boys win school's first title in any sport, Douglas girls win second straight.
Luis Chaidez scored two second-half goals as
Legacy (North Las Vegas) knocked off
Desert Pines (Las Vegas) 3-0 to win the 4A boys soccer state championship at Bettye Wilson Park in Las Vegas. It is the first state title in a team sport for Legacy, which opened in 2006.
"It's the best thing. This is what we wanted from the beginning," Chaidez told Nevadapreps.com. "Words can't explain what I feel; I've dreamed of this day, and now it's here."
Legacy (20-1-1) was held without a shot on goal in the first half against the Jaguars (15-4-3), who were making their first playoff appearance since 2005. But Chaidez scored on a rebound five minutes after halftime and added another tally in the 59th minute.
Desert Pines advanced to the title game with a 3-2 win over Bishop Gorman on Cruz Cortes' goal in the second overtime. Legacy knocked off Spanish Springs (Sparks) 2-0 in the other semifinal.
DOUGLAS GIRLS SOCCER GOES BACK-TO-BACKDouglas (Minden) earned its second straight 4A girls soccer state title, beating
Galena (Reno) 2-0 at Damonte Ranch in Reno.
It was the second consecutive year that the Tigers topped Galena for the championship. Southern Nevada sponsors girls soccer in the winter.
"It just feels really good," Douglas' Tia Lyons told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "I mean, not many people get to say that they have won two straight championships. It feels awesome."
Lyons opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Kaitlyn Dry, who had a breakaway stopped early on, added a goal in the 54th minute off a cross from Alex Laing. Bri Randall had seven saves to earn the shutout.
South Tahoe (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) won the boys and girls 3A state crowns. The boys beat Sparks 3-1 while the girls topped Truckee 3-0.
