Basketball Recap: Drew Comes Up Short

Drew was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They fell 72-61 to the Mays Raiders. While losing is never fun, Drew can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 234th, while Mays is ranked 67th).

When it comes to explaining why Drew lost, don't look at Juelz Scott. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten boards. The dominant performance gave Scott a new career-high in points. Joseph Pressil was another key player, putting up nine points in addition to five assists and five steals.

Even though they lost, Drew was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Leading Mays to victory were Jack Sparks and Davenport Cox. Sparks dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 assists, while Cox went 9 of 20 en route to 24 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. The matchup was Cox's 12th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Clayton Coppock, who posted nine points and five steals.

Drew's defeat dropped their record down to 6-11. As for Mays, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season.

Drew didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 64-62 win against Mundy's Mill on the 18th. Mays has also already played their next match, a 67-63 victory against Sandy Creek on the 20th.
