Basketball Game Preview: Newton-Conover Red Devils vs. Alexander Central Cougars

Newton-Conover hasn't had much luck against Alexander Central recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Newton-Conover Red Devils will wrap up 2024 with a road trip to face off against the Alexander Central Cougars at 6:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Newton-Conover comes in on three and Alexander Central on six.

While Newton-Conover didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-18), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They managed a 51-45 victory over South Caldwell on Saturday.

Newton-Conover got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Sara Sain out in front who posted ten points and five rebounds. Sain continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Mira Sigmon, who went 5 of 11 on her way to 14 points.

Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Alexander Central beat Maiden 48-43 on Saturday.

Newton-Conover better focus on containing Malayah Adams and Meredith Wike as the pair were huge in Alexander Central's win. Adams had 17 points and five steals, while Wike put up 18 points and eight rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Addie Jack, who posted five points.

Newton-Conover's record is now 8-1. As for Alexander Central, their record is now 9-2.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Newton-Conover hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 62.3 points per game. However, it's not like Alexander Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging 56.1 points. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Newton-Conover came up short against Alexander Central in their previous meeting two weeks ago, falling 47-37. Can Newton-Conover avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
