Baseball Game Preview: Smithfield-Selma Spartans vs. Clayton Comets

Smithfield-Selma hasn't had much luck against Clayton recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Spartans will take on the Comets at 11:30 a.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Smithfield-Selma is headed into Monday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 33rd straight game dating back to last season on Saturday. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-1 heartbreaker at the hands of North Johnston. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Spartans have suffered since March 12th.

Smithfield-Selma saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Blake Thigpen, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple was Thigpen's first of the season.

Meanwhile, Clayton unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell 8-5 to Wake County HomeSchool.

Jamison Lynch made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.

Smithfield-Selma's loss dropped their record down to 0-17. As for Clayton, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-7.

Smithfield-Selma might still be hurting after the 11-3 loss they got from Clayton in their previous meeting last Wednesday. Can the Spartans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
