League recap: Echols-Luper breaks off league-leading run for Auburn

Cameron Echols-Luper of Auburn ran for the longest rushing play in 6A Region 3 this season against Gadsden City last week. Echols-Luper ran for 65 yards on the play and finished with 211 on the day as his team beat the Titans.

Smiths Station moved up to 75 from 119 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Panthers climbed the ranks as a result of a 35-20 win over Beauregard.

Carver's dynamic duo of Jeremy Johnson and Landy Capetillo proved tough for Tri-Cities to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Johnson threw for 338 yards and five touchdowns and Capetillo had 189 yards receiving. Charles Standberry helped Carver's passing attack out by catching six balls for 62 yards.

Quentin Heard made the biggest impact on defense this week as Auburn beat Gadsden City. The defensive lineman grabbed one sack.

Carver's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Wolverines feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Johnson has thrown for 1352 yards and 17 touchdowns this season, while Capetillo has 20 catches for 442 yards. Harvey Harris leads the league in rushing with 494 yards.

The marquee game in 6A Region 3 this week will be the clash between Tim Carter's team and the Wolverines. The Tigers comes into the matchup ranked third in the state, while Carver ranks fifth.

Two highly touted recruits will be in the spotlight when Auburn and Billy Gresham's team meet this week. The Tigers features well-regarded senior Reuben Foster while the Wolverines has Johnson, a sought after senior.

There should be lots of points scored when Auburn and Carver face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Tigers comes in having scored 225 this season, while the Wolverines have scored 231. Auburn scored 49 points last week as it defeated Joe Billingsley's team.

Opelika was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Valley 35-0. The Bulldogs came in at 18 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.
