Basketball Preview: Manchester Squires vs. Eastern Comets
The Manchester Squires are taking a road trip to face off against the Eastern Comets at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Manchester focused on turnovers this week as the team gave up 12 on Saturday.
On Saturday, Manchester was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 49-45 to Oak Hill. The Squires have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
The losing side was boosted by Molly Schannep, who went 5 for 7 en route to 10 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton Ream, who earned eight points.
Meanwhile, Eastern was not able to break out of their rough patch last Saturday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat dating back to last season. They took a 53-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of Anderson Prep Academy. One positive for the Comets, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Lainey Newlin, who went 6 for 9 en route to 14 points plus five assists and five rebounds. Marly Coan was another key player, going 6 for 12 en route to 15 points plus six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Eastern was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in January.
Manchester's loss dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Eastern, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Manchester has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 27.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Eastern struggles in that department as they've been averaging 25.3. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything went Manchester's way against Eastern when the teams last played back in November of 2023, as Manchester made off with a 61-35 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Manchester since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
