Basketball Recap: Rio Grande Takes a Loss

Rio Grande was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 13th straight loss. They took a blow against the West Mesa Mustangs, falling 86-36. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mustangs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 51-43 back in January.

Rio Grande lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Mateo Gonzalez, who dropped a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. That was a full 52.8% of Rio Grande's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sebastian Vicu?a, who put up four points.

Even though they lost, Rio Grande was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2024.

Rio Grande's defeat dropped their record down to 3-20. As for West Mesa, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-9.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Rio Grande will welcome Atrisco Heritage Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for West Mesa, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Valley at 1:00 p.m.
