Basketball Recap: Liberty Comes Up Short

Liberty was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. The match between them and the Linn-Mar Lions didn't end well, with the Liberty Lightning falling 86-70. While losing is never fun, the Lightning can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Iowa basketball rankings (they are ranked 217th, while the Lions are ranked fourth).

When it comes to explaining why Liberty lost, don't look at Maddoc Coapstick. Despite the final result, he went 11 of 21 en route to 24 points in addition to six assists and three steals. The dominant performance gave Coapstick a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Chase Goodheart, who went 5 for 8 on his way to 15 points.

Liberty's loss dropped their record down to 2-12. As for Linn-Mar, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 15-3.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Iowa City West the next time they take the court. Linn-Mar will host Iowa City West at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Liberty will host them at 7:30 p.m. on January 31st.
