Basketball Recap: Ashlynn Day's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Gateway over New Smyrna Beach

Gateway and New Smyrna Beach squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Gateway had to settle for second. They took a 56-48 hit to the loss column at the hands of the New Smyrna Beach Barracudas. The matchup marked the Panthers' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Several Panthers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Ashlynn Day, who dropped a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Day is also crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least four every time she's taken the court this season. AndreA SuAzo was another key player, putting up ten points along with eight boards and three steals.

New Smyrna Beach was led to victory by Olivia Olson and Iniya Reddicks. Olson dropped a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Reddicks went 7 of 14 on her way to 14 points and eight boards. Another player making a difference was Riley France, who posted four points and five rebounds.

Gateway's loss dropped their record down to 20-6. As for New Smyrna Beach, the win was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 22-5.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Gateway will square off against Lake Wales at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Gateway is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 66 points per game this season. As for New Smyrna Beach, they will take on Jones at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. New Smyrna Beach knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past ten contests -- so hopefully Jones likes a good challenge.
