Softball Recap: Mauston Comes Up Short

Mauston extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 22 on Monday, dropping their season record down to 0-19 in the process. They came up short against the Nekoosa Papermakers, falling 21-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Papermakers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-0 back in April.

As for Nekoosa, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by 11 runs or more this season.

For Nekoosa's part, Bristal Brock was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Brock has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sofia Gaupp, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Ashlyn Garza, who went 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mauston will take on Wautoma at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Nekoosa, they will be playing at home against Wisconsin Dells at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Chiefs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.43 runs per game on average), something the Papermakers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
