Baseball Recap: Grassfield Wins Going Away Against Nansemond River

Grassfield barely beat Nansemond River the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Grizzlies blew past the Warriors 11-1 on Thursday. The Grizzlies haven't had any issues with the Warriors recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.

Giacomo Franco made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over 5.2 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Grassfield is undefeated when Franco posts two or more runs, but 3-5 otherwise.

In other batting news, Cayden McBride and BJ McIntyre did most of the damage at the plate: McBride went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while McIntyre went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double. That double was McIntyre's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jameson Dick, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Grassfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Grassfield's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-5. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games. As for Nansemond River, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Grassfield will head out to take on Woodside at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Grizzlies' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wolverines have averaged an impressive 10.6 runs per game this season. As for Nansemond River, they are taking a road trip to square off against Greenbrier Christian Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Gators will roll in looking for their 17th straight win, something the Warriors surely won't give up without a fight.
