Baseball Recap: Grossmont Takes a Loss

Grossmont had lost five straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 9-15 to make it six. They lost 12-3 to the Helix Highlanders. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Highlanders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-4 on Thursday.

Grossmont saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Max Tufugafale, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

As for Helix, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-10. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games.

On Helix's side, Matt Martinez looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Martinez has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Rory Kleiner, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Angel Watkins was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Grossmont will face off against rival Valhalla at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Helix is set to square off against their familiar foe Granite Hills at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Highlanders 3.4, the Eagles 1.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
