Preview: Alameda Pirates vs. Denver West Cowboys
The Alameda Pirates will head out on the road to face off against the Denver West Cowboys at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Alameda is hoping to put an end to a seven-game streak of away losses.
Alameda fell victim to Elizabeth's stalwart defense on Thursday and couldn't make it onto the board. They were beaten by the Cardinals 56-0. Alameda was already down big by the end of the third quarter and they stayed that way after failing to score in the fourth.
Meanwhile, after only six points in their last contest, Denver West made sure to put some points up on the board against Englewood on Saturday. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, Denver West made off with a 33-32 win over Englewood. The victory was a breath of fresh air for Denver West as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.
Denver West's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Meekael Garcia, who threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in a rushing score. Roman Blea also deserves a mention for his punt return touchdown.
The opposite results left the teams with opposite records: Elizabeth's victory pushed their record up to 7-1, while Alameda's defeat dropped theirs down to 1-7.
Alameda was taken down by Denver West 50-6 in their previous meeting back in October of 2021. Thankfully for Alameda, Alphonso Flores (who rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries, and also threw for 94 yards and a touchdown while completing 72.7% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time.
