Volleyball Recap: Tuesday's Loss Ends Amherst's Winning Streak

After a string of five wins, Amherst's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kearney Catholic Stars. If the Broncos were looking for revenge after losing 3-1 to the Stars when the teams met back in October of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

While Amherst ultimately came up short, they didn't go down without a fight: they scored at least 18 points in every set they played. The match finished with set scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18.

Despite the loss, Amherst still got an impressive performance from Breckyn Layne Veskerna, who had 23 digs and one assist.

Among those leading the charge was Lainey Murphy, who had 16 digs and two assists. Those 16 digs gave her a new career-high.

Amherst's loss dropped their record down to 17-5. As for Kearney Catholic, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-7.

Amherst and Kearney Catholic should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Nebraska Rankings. The Broncos (ranked 36th) will meet Axtell (ranked 149th) at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Kearney Catholic will challenge Scotus at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank advantage (29 vs. 100).
