Baseball Game Preview: Marquez Gladiators vs. Sotomayor Wolves

The Marquez Gladiators will face off against the Sotomayor Wolves at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Marquez is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.

Having struggled with four defeats in a row, Marquez turned things around against Maywood Academy on Monday. They put the hurt on the Eagles with a sharp 19-2 victory. The high-scoring effort was just what the Gladiators needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.

John Olvera made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed two innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Olvera was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Bryan Lopez was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with five RBI, three runs, and two doubles. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaime Hernandez, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs.

Marquez was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .529. They are 7-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Sotomayor was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They lost 14-3 to Cathedral.

Marquez's win bumped their record up to 9-11. As for Sotomayor, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-7.
