Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Sets Scoring Season-High Against Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Mary). They walked away with a 73-63 victory over the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cougars on Friday. This was a revenge game for the Saints: when they faced off against the Cougars back in December of 2024, they had to take a 66-54 loss.

St. Mary's was led to victory by Bailey Harris and Alexandra Vandiver. Harris went 14 of 21 en route to 39 points in addition to six rebounds and four blocks, while Vandiver dropped a double-double on 22 points and 12 boards. That makes it four consecutive games in which Harris has scored at least a third of St. Mary's points. Another player making a difference was Anna Ervin, who posted four points and five boards.

St. Mary's smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in seven consecutive contests.

Despite the defeat, Our Lady of Mount Carmel saw an underclassman step up: freshman Jaylah King scored 21 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kiersten Rurka, who earned 11 points.

St. Mary's moved to 8-8 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-7.

St. Mary's has already played their next matchup (against Archbishop Spalding), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Our Lady of Mount Carmel will take on Shaker at 2:30 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Shaker's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last three games.
