Basketball Recap: Johntta Thomas Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Milby

Cesar E. Chavez posted their closest win since December 22, 2023 on Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Milby Buffs, sneaking past 52-50. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Lobos also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2024.

Cesar E. Chavez got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Johntta Thomas out in front who posted 14 points. Another player making a difference was Grant Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Cesar E. Chavez smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in eight consecutive games.

Several Buffs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kobe Brown, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds. Those nine boards gave Brown a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Delani Pestaina, who put up 15 points and six rebounds.

Cesar E. Chavez's record is now 8-10. As for Milby, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season.

Cesar E. Chavez will look to defend their home court on Monday against Westside at 6:00 p.m. Westside will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Cesar E. Chavez surely won't give up without a fight. As for Milby, they will challenge Waltrip at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Waltrip's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 11 contests.
