Basketball Recap: Garden County Sets Scoring Season-High Against Sutherland

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Garden County). They claimed a resounding 59-32 win over the Sutherland Sailors. For the Eagles, this counts as revenge for the 42-28 victory the Sailors walked away with the last time they faced one another back in January of 2024.

Garden County got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Kelney Dehning out in front who posted 12 points along with seven boards and six steals. Dehning has become a key player for Garden County: the team is undefeated when she posts at least three steals, but 6-8 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Olivia Christiansen, who scored ten points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.

Garden County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 24 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 20 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Mahala Vasquez and Payten Weber certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Vasquez put up 13 points and five boards, while Weber had nine points. What's more, Weber also posted a 50% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's posted since back in January of 2024.

Garden County now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Sutherland, their defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 3-14.

Garden County wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 54-29 victory against Arthur County on the 6th. As for Sutherland, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 52-36 loss against Wauneta-Palisade on the 7th.
