Basketball Recap: Thane Wetjen's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Heartland over Sandy Creek

Heartland was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They lost 62-41 to the Sandy Creek Cougars. If the Huskies were looking for revenge after losing 70-38 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Several Huskies players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Thane Wetjen, who went 6 for 9 on his way to 13 points and seven rebounds. Wetjen is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Trenton Goertzen, who posted nine points.

Sandy Creek had a senior duo take command as Ethan Shaw went 8 of 13 en route to 17 points along with seven boards and three steals and Jack Clark went 5 for 12 on his way to 15 points. That's the most points Clark has posted since back in December of 2023. Wyatt Hemberger also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Heartland's loss dropped their record down to 3-11. As for Sandy Creek, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season.

Heartland will welcome Nebraska Christian at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Sandy Creek, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 40-38 win against Thayer Central on the 25th.
