Mathia return stakes Cats to win over Silver Lake

Derek Mathia's kick return helps stop Silver Lake's regular-season win streak.

Louisburg return specialist Derek Mathia raced up the right sideline with the game’s opening kick and stunned the Silver Lake crowd that’s not used to losing as he crossed the goal line in Friday’s non-conference win over Class 3A’s second-ranked Eagles at C.J. Hamilton Field.

The 88-yard return in the game’s opening seconds spearheaded two more first quarter touchdowns as Class 4A’s second-ranked Wildcats put an end to Silver Lake’s 52-game regular-season win streak.

"It's pretty dang important to get the first punch in, and I think we did," Louisburg coach Gary Griffin told the Topeka Capital Journal. "That kind of set them back a bit, and then we got the ball back and get another one in. Then we got a third one in and then it kind of got ugly. If you'd told me we'd score 21 points, I'd said we'd win."

Louisburg's David Embers set up Alex Gentges' 1-yard score by latching on to a 48-yard strike from the arm of Kody Cook on the Wildcats' first play from scrimmage, putting Louisburg up 14-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Cameron Rickel set up Silver Lake's first scoring opportunity when he raced 82 yards to the Louisburg 11. The Wildcat defense held, however, and Silver Lake had to settle for Jesse Barnes' 25-yard field goal.

Gentges scored on a 2-yard run later in the opening quarter to round out the game's scoring. Combined, the two stop units allowed just 326 yards of offense collectively.

Before Friday's contest, Silver Lake hadn't lost a regular season game since falling 17-7 to St. Mary’s in October 2004. The Eagles outscored their opposition 2,195-363 during the 52-game stretch. Silver Lake won 75 of 80 games overall and went 23-5 in the playoffs, winning the Class 3A title in 2006.

With the win, Louisburg (4-0) remains second in the 4A rankings behind Topeka Hayden, which knocked off Class 6A foe Topeka Washburn Rural 23-21 last weekend. Hayden's lone loss on the year came at the hands of Class 6A's third-ranked Manhattan, 7-6, in the season's opening weekend. Silver Lake (3-1) falls to sixth in the latest Class 3A rankings.

CONWAY SPRINGS DOUBLES UP ON GARDEN PLAIN
In another contest featuring a pair of top five Class 3A teams, Conway Springs raced to a 29-14 win over Garden Plain Friday behind the running of Cory Misak, who rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

Misak took his second carry of the game to the house from 70 yards out and then added a third quarter score on a 72-yard punt return. He found pay dirt in the fourth quarter from nine yards away. Brian Doffing scored for Conway Springs as well, finding the end zone in the fourth quarter from 43 yards out. Joey Capul scored on runs of 2 and 3 yards for Garden Plain.

Top-ranked Wichita Collegiate's 33-21 loss to Andale, paired with Silver Lake’s loss to Louisburg, allowed Conway Springs to move into the top spot after sitting third last week. Garden Plain, meanwhile, falls to eighth in the latest Class 3A rankings.
