Basketball Recap: Roncalli Takes a Loss

Roncalli was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 61-53 to the Indianapolis Bishop Chatard Trojans. The Royals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Trojans apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January.

Despite the defeat, Roncalli saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Elliot Leffler posted 16 points and seven rebounds. Leffler has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last seven times she's played. Another player making a difference was Brennah Cerny, who had nine points.

Even though they lost, Roncalli smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in four consecutive games.

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard was led to victory by Anna Caskey and Olivia Berzai. Caskey dropped a double-double on 19 points and 21 boards, while Berzai went 8 of 12 on her way to 20 points and seven rebounds. That's the most points Berzai has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyx Kendall, who put up nine points and six boards.

Roncalli's loss dropped their record down to 7-5. As for Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.

Roncalli didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 50-40 defeat against Gibson Southern on the 21st. As for Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, they will take on Faith Christian in a tournament on Friday. Indianapolis Bishop Chatard is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.7 points per game this season.
