Recap: St. John's Islanders vs. Cross Trojans
The St. John's Islanders suffered their biggest loss since December 1, 2023 on Friday. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 58-36 walloping at the hands of Cross. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss St. John's has suffered against Cross since January 4, 2020.
Several Islanders players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kaniya Smith, who scored 14 points along with six assists and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Daeshia Buford, who scored ten points along with six steals.
Cross' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Lauren Middleton led the charge by scoring 18 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. That's the first time this season that Middleton pulled down eight or more rebounds. Another player making a difference was Zhania Fredricks, who scored 16 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
This is the second loss in a row for St. John's and nudges their season record down to 7-8. As for Cross, they pushed their record up to 11-2 with that victory, which was their ninth straight at home.
St. John's will head out on the road to face off against Burke at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Cross, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Military Magnet Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Military Magnet Academy has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 657 points over their last seven games.
