Baseball Recap: Smithfield Takes Down Ranked Barrington

Smithfield faced Barrington in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Sentinels were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over the Eagles. The Sentinels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.

Dom Lombardi looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Wyatt Speakman and Sean Dwyer did most of the damage at the plate: Speakman went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Dwyer went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those three hits gave Speakman a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Dwyer, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Smithfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Smithfield pushed their record up to 10-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Barrington, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 10-5.

Coming up, Smithfield will head out to face off against Westerly at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something the Sentinels surely won't give up without a fight. As for Barrington, they will host South Kingstown at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Rebels' pitching crew has only allowed 2.3 runs per game this season, so the Eagles' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
