Baseball Recap: Varela Has No Trouble Against South Dade

Varela owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Thursday. Everything went their way against the South Dade Buccaneers as they made off with a 7-0 victory. The Vipers not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since March 5th (when they won 15-4).

Varela got a great performance from Andy Espinoza as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Espinoza has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Jonathan Paniagua was excellent, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one triple. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alejandro Ponte, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

The win made it two in a row for Varela and bumps their season record up to 15-6-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for South Dade, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-12.

Varela didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, an 11-1 win against Hialeah on the 15th. As for South Dade, they have also already played their next match, a 4-2 victory against Palmetto on the 14th.
