Baseball Recap: Del Mar Dons vs. Piedmont Hills Pirates
Del Mar had lost ten straight at home dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 2-15 to make it 11. They came up short against the Piedmont Hills Pirates, falling 10-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 21-2 on April 3rd.
As for Piedmont Hills, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 11-8. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine contests by seven runs or more this season.
For Piedmont Hills' part, Travis Linane was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Linane has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Josh Gomez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Piedmont Hills is undefeated when Gomez posts two or more runs, but 6-8 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Jake Paskert, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Del Mar will head out to challenge Gilroy at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Dons are facing the Mustangs at the right time seeing as the Mustangs are stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Piedmont Hills, they are taking a road trip to square off against Ann Sobrato at 4:00 p.m. on the 29th.
