Football Game Preview: La Villa Cardinals vs. Iola Bulldogs

The La Villa Cardinals will square off against the Iola Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

La Villa is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They took their contest with ease, bagging a 49-8 win over Louise. Given the Cardinals' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 376th, while the Hornets are ranked 968th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead La Villa to victory, but perhaps none more so than Isaiah Felix, who threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns on only 16 passes, and also rushed for 34 yards and a pair of scores. A healthy portion of Felix's aerial production (127 yards to be exact) went to Austin Cantu, who also brought in two receiving touchdowns.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: La Villa was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 254 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 176 rushing yards in eight consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Iola won against Bartlett back in October with 50 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Thursday. The Bulldogs were the clear victors by a 50-27 margin over Sabinal. Winning may never get old, but the Bulldogs sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.

This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Adrian Garrett and Austin Calvillo. Garrett rushed for 208 yards and three TDs while picking up 8.7 yards per carry while Calvillo rushed for 133 yards and a pair of scores on only 15 carries. Tyler Elliott was another key player, rushing for 121 yards on only 13 carries.

La Villa's record now sits at 9-1. As for Iola, their record is now 6-3.
