Softball Recap: Independence Comes Up Short

If Independence was riding high fresh off their 18-0 takedown of Chambers on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Patriots took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the East Mecklenburg Eagles on Thursday. The Patriots were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Eagles earlier this season, when they won 14-3.

Michaela Williams spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits.

At the plate, Independence saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gianna McCloud, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Independence's loss dropped their record down to 9-6. As for East Mecklenburg, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 10-5.

Coming up, Independence will challenge Mallard Creek at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Mavericks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.5 runs per game on average), something the Patriots will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for East Mecklenburg, they will face off against Rocky River at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Ravens have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 20 runs per game on average), something the Eagles will no doubt try to take advantage of.
