Recap: Douglas Byrd Eagles vs. Cape Fear Colts

The Douglas Byrd Eagles lost against the Cape Fear Colts two weeks ago, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. Douglas Byrd was beaten by Cape Fear 83-43. While losing is never fun, Douglas Byrd can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 446th, while Cape Fear is ranked 29th).

Despite the defeat, Douglas Byrd had strong showings from Gemaiyia Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Jazmine Burns, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. That was a full 39.5% of Douglas Byrd's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

Jayda Angel was her usual excellent self, shooting 4-for-7 from deep and dropping a triple-double on 52 points, 11 rebounds, and ten steals for Cape Fear. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Angel has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Kayia Starling, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and three steals.

Douglas Byrd has not been sharp recently as the team's lost nine of their last ten contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-16 record this season. As for Cape Fear, the win (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 18-1.

Douglas Byrd will be playing in front of their home fans against Lumberton at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Douglas Byrd focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 45 on Tuesday. As for Cape Fear, they will head out on the road to challenge Jack Britt at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Jack Britt is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
