Santa Monica fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Royal on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Highlanders by a score of 5-3. The Vikings' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

Eddie Jennings was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Santa Monica saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Eric Gonzalez, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Santa Monica's loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for Royal, the win (which was their 12th in a row) raised their record to 12-1.

Looking ahead, Santa Monica will square off against Hawthorne at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hawthorne has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.33 runs per game on average), something Santa Monica will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Royal, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 7-6 defeat against El Segundo on the 29th.
