REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -
Menlo-Atherton (Atherton, Calif.) took an early lead against
Sequoia (Redwood City, Calif.) and held on for a 28-10 victory on Saturday.
The Bears scored seven points in the first quarter. Menlo-Atherton scored on a
Brian Keare touchdown pass to
Ryan Roberts.
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by Keare to Roberts in the first quarter, MA led 21-3 at the half.
The Atherton school saw its 18-point halftime lead decrease to 11 entering the fourth.
Sequoia's lone touchdown came on a 1-yard run by
Faavae Brown in the third quarter.
Coming into the game the Bears had allowed 18.5 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding the Cherokee well below their season average of 22.2 points scored per game.
The victory was a step in the right direction for MA, which was coming off a 15-12 defeat at the hands of Sacred Heart Prep in its previous game. The loss was the fourth in a row for Sequoia.
Sequoia (3-4) will play a Peninsula - Bay game against Sacred Heart Prep next week, while Menlo-Atherton (5-2) will take on Terra Nova also in a Peninsula - Bay game.
