Softball Recap: Waverly's Loss Ends Eight-Game Winning Streak at Home

Waverly dropped their record down to 3-3 on Saturday, which also ended the team's eight-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season. They came up short against the Elmira Express, falling 17-2. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wolverines of the 14-12 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

As for Elmira, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 4-4. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by seven runs or more this season.

For Elmira's part, Marley Devlin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Devlin has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ryleigh Ogden, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, two stolen bases, and two doubles. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Madelynn Cavalier, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three RBI and two runs.

Looking ahead, Waverly will be playing in front of their home fans against Southside at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Elmira, they will be taking part in a tournament against Pittsford at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
