St. Thomas Aquinas, the Miami area's top team and No. 9 in the country, struggled mightily against host and No. 21 Western on Friday night. But the defense and special teams came to the rescue in a 41-6 victory.

Tyson Russell (55 yards) and Colby Dempsey (29 yards) came through with pick 6s for the Raiders, and Jaden McBurrows added a 99-yard kickoff return for touchdown as St. Thomas Aquinas improved to 9-0.

Western, which led briefly in the second half on an Erik Rozanski touchdown catch, dropped to 7-2.

That TD catch gave Western a 7-3 lead, but McBurrows immediately gave the Raiders the lead back on his kickoff return. On Western's next possession, Russell returned an interception 55 yards and the Raiders were well on their way.

A 60-yard touchdown pass from Zion Turner to Jahvante Royal made it 24-10 and after a field goal, Dempsey's pick 6 made it 31-10.

The rest of the match-ups in the Top 25 Miami rankings, went pretty much according to plan. The next five Top 10 teams, No. 6 Cardinal Gibbon, No. 7 Palmetto, No. 8 Gulliver Prep, No. 9 Chaminade-Madonna and No. 10 Deerfield Beach, won by a combined score of 246-45.
