Basketball Recap: Athena Dews Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Stratford

There's no place like home for Lucy Beckham, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Saturday. They managed a 49-45 win over the Stratford Knights on Tuesday. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 55-53 back in January.

Lucy Beckham's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Athena Dews, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds. Dews is becoming a predictor of Lucy Beckham's success: when she posts at least eight boards the team is undefeated (and 5-9 when she doesn't). Lindsey Meslow was another key player, going 6 for 14 en route to 13 points.

When it comes to explaining why Stratford lost, don't look at Ciara Mustapher. Despite the final result, she posted 21 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. The contest was Mustapher's fourth in a row with at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Averi Johnson, who scored 11 points.

Lucy Beckham's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-9. As for Stratford, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last seven matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-14 record this season.

Lucy Beckham wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 54-37 defeat against Goose Creek on the 7th. As for Stratford, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 59-21 victory against Cane Bay on the 6th.
