Soccer Game Preview: Sumner vs. Spanaway Lake

The Sumner Spartans are taking a road trip to take on the Spanaway Lake Sentinels at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Sumner has four straight wins, Spanaway Lake has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the pitch.

Sumner had to skate by with only a one-goal margin when they last took the pitch, which might have inspired the seven-goal drubbing they dealt Yelm on Tuesday. The Spartans never let the Tornados get on the board and left with a 7-0 victory. Given Sumner's advantage in MaxPreps' Washington soccer rankings (they are ranked 14th, while Yelm are ranked 231st) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Tuesday just wasn't the day for Spanaway Lake's offense. They lost 6-0 to Bonney Lake on Tuesday.

Spanaway Lake's loss dropped their record down to 0-10-1. As for Sumner, their win bumped their record up to 8-1-3.

Sumner took their victory against Spanaway Lake in their previous meeting back in October of 2024 by a conclusive 12-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the team won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
