Basketball Game Preview: Castleberry Lions vs. Decatur Eagles

Castleberry hasn't had much luck against Decatur recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Castleberry Lions will face off against the Decatur Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Castleberry is headed into the match out to prove that what happened against Krum on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Castleberry had to suffer through a 87-55 loss at the hands of Krum. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 872nd, while the Bobcats are ranked 210th).

Meanwhile, Decatur was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Bridgeport 85-44. That 41 point margin sets a new team best for the Eagles this season.

Castleberry better keep an eye on Javen Colbert. He was instrumental in Decatur's win, going 15 for 25 en route to 40 points along with six assists and five boards. The game was Colbert's tenth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Adan Gonzalez, who went 7 of 13 on his way to 19 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Decatur is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 20-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 78.2 points per game. As for Castleberry, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-13.

Castleberry skirted past Decatur 51-49 in their previous matchup back in December of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Castleberry since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
