Football Game Preview: High Plains Storm vs. Lawrence-Nelson Raiders

The High Plains Storm are taking a road trip to challenge the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders on Friday. High Plains has given up an average of 29.3 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

High Plains took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They blew past Giltner, posting an 80-34 win. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for the Storm considering their eight-point performance the matchup before.

High Plains didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off five passes before the game was over. Chase Owens led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by himself. Carson Swedenburg also punched in two rushing touchdowns, which is notable because High Plains is 2-1 when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns, but 1-2 otherwise. Camden Mattox got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Lawrence-Nelson played against Nebraska Lutheran on Friday and won via forfeit.

High Plains pushed their record up to 3-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 6.8 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.1 in the others. As for Lawrence-Nelson, their win bumped their record up to 5-1.

High Plains skirted past Lawrence-Nelson 22-20 in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was the Raiders' Wyatt Frey, who rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.2 yards per carry.
