The Mesquite Wildcats will be taking part in a tournament against the Mountain View Toros at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Mesquite is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Mesquite will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Saturday, then bounced right back against Gilbert on Monday. Everything went Mesquite's way against Gilbert as Mesquite made off with a 13-2 win. Surprisingly, this marked the fifth straight game that the away team has come away the victor.
Jacob Martinez tossed a big game, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Andres Lozano was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Bently Sandall was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
Mesquite hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Mountain View came up short against Perry on Monday and fell 5-1. The loss continues a trend for the Toros in their meetings with the Pumas: they've now lost three in a row.
Mountain View saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Beckham Barney, who went 1-for-4 with one double and one RBI. That double marked the first that Barney hit this season.
Mesquite's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-2. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mountain View, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-5.
Mountain View's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mesquite has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .455. It's a different story for Mountain View, though, as they've only averaged .330. Will they be able to contain Mesquite's hitters?
Mesquite suffered a grim 12-5 defeat to Mountain View in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Can Mesquite avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
