Newburgh Free Academy is 8-2 against Middletown since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Goldbacks will be playing in front of their home fans against the Middie Bears at 4:15 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Middletown will be up against a hot Newburgh Free Academy team: the squad just extended their winning streak to four. The Goldbacks never let Tallwood get on the board and left with a 10-0 win on Friday. That ten run margin sets a new team best for the Goldbacks this season.
Connor Hollenbeck looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Newburgh Free Academy saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Antonio Vinciguerra, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave Vinciguerra a new career-high. JJ McCoy was another, getting on base in both of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Newburgh Free Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .577. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Middletown, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 6-0 margin over Rondout Valley on Thursday.
Jarod Melendez was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Daniel Aviles, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Newburgh Free Academy's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Middletown, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Newburgh Free Academy took their victory against Middletown in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 12-6 score. Will the Goldbacks repeat their success, or do the Middie Bears have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
