Basketball Recap: Mt. Vernon Snags Ninth Victory in Last 12 Games

Mt. Vernon's game on Tuesday was all tied up 11-11 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. They snuck past the New Castle Trojans with a 34-28 win. Given the Marauders' advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 41st, while the Trojans are ranked 264th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mt. Vernon's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zoey Wood, who posted 22 points. Wood's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabby Thomas, who earned 11 points.

Despite the defeat, New Castle saw an underclassman step up: freshman Carlee Lanzer scored 13 points and five rebounds.

Mt. Vernon has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season. As for New Castle, they have also traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-16 record this season.

Mt. Vernon has already played their next contest, a 55-52 win against Delta on the 30th. New Castle has also already played their next match (against Anderson), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
