Basketball Recap: Wayne County Comes Up Short

Wayne County lost against Benedictine two weeks ago and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Wayne County Yellow Jackets took a 64-49 bruising from the Benedictine Cadets. While losing is never fun, the Yellow Jackets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 370th, while the Cadets are ranked 30th).

When it comes to explaining why Wayne County lost, don't look at Dwayne Smith. Despite the final result, he posted 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Hilton, who earned nine points.

Even though they lost, Wayne County was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since the start of last season.

Caleb Jones was his usual excellent self, going 8 for 16 on his way to 23 points in addition to eight boards and five assists for Benedictine. The contest was Jones' 43rd in a row with at least ten points. John Lilly was another key player, as he made all 7 shots he took for 15 points and eight rebounds.

Wayne County has been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season. As for Benedictine, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-3 record this season.

Wayne County will welcome Warner Robins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Benedictine, they will venture away from home to square off against Perry at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Benedictine is facing Perry at the right time seeing as Perry is stuck on a nine-game losing streak.
