Basketball Recap: Canyon Comes Up Short

Canyon has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 76-70 heartbreaker at the hands of the La Habra Highlanders. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (60), the Comanches still had to take the loss.

Despite the loss, Canyon still got an impressive performance from Brandon Benjamin, who dropped a double-double on 31 points and 14 boards. That was a full 44.3% of Canyon's points, marking the 12th time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Staf Yilmazturk, who almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine rebounds.

Even though they lost, Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive matches.

Canyon's loss dropped their record down to 19-8. As for La Habra, the win snapped their losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 19-8 record.

Canyon will take on Crean Lutheran at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Canyon knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five games -- so hopefully Crean Lutheran likes a good challenge. As for La Habra, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 73-48 victory against Foothill on the 31st.
