MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Girls Lacrosse Rankings

St. Anthony's (N.Y.) had something to prove Saturday when it took on Garden City in a battle of two of the top teams on Long Island.

The Friars had suffered a tough 15-7 defeat to Bryn Mawr the week before at the Maryland-New York Challenge. Since that time, St. Anthony's won two games to get back on track – including an impressive 19-5 rout of Catholic League rival Sacred Heart - but it had its sights on taking bragging rights on Long Island.

And indeed, the Friars came out blazing against the Trojans, who had defeated them 11-10 last year in double overtime. This time St. Anthony's seized a 9-2 lead and never let up en route to a 14-9 victory.

Tori Holland made 13 saves and Annie Heagerty led the attack with four goals and two assists. Maggie Bill added three goals and an assist, while Darcy Messina, Chrissy Schreiber and Alexis Nicolia each scored a pair.



"Our defense and offense came out hard," said Holland, a senior. "We played great. Our fast break offense was really great today and our defense really crashed hard and did what they had to do."

St. Anthony's used a suffocating defense to keep the dangerous Trojans attack off balance.

"I am really proud of my girls," said St. Anthony's coach Corrine Lomangino. "In a lot of ways this was their response to our loss in Maryland to Bryn Mawr, (last) week. They really showed what we are made of as a team and I'm proud of their character."

Alexandra Bruno led the Trojans with five goals and one assist.

1. (No. 1 last week) McDonogh (Owings Mills, Md.), 15-0
The Eagles swept through the powerful IAAM like a tidal wave, going 11-0 and winning every game by eight or more goals. They disposed of No. 7 Century on Monday, 15-8, and now gear for the IAAM quarterfinals on May 8.



2. (2) Bryn Mawr (Baltimore), 15-1
The Mawrtians earned the second seed in the IAAM tourney. They open playoff action May 8 in the quarterfinals. Their highlight last week was an 8-7 overtime win over Notre Dame Prep as Molly Wolf made 16 saves and Caroline Turco had the game-winner.

3. (3) Moorestown (N.J.), 14-0
The Quakers earned a 16-8 victory over St, Paul's (Md.) Saturday as Marie McCool scored seven goals and Stephanie Toy had five goals and an assist. They host 12-2 Harriton on Friday.

4. (4) St. Anthony's (Melville, N.Y.), 9-1
The Friars avenged an 11-10, double overtime loss to Garden City (N.Y.) Saturday with the 14-9 victory. Their next big game is May 11 when they host Sacred Heart (N.Y.).

5. (6) Farmingdale (N.Y.), 9-0
The Dalers warmed up for their Tuesday date at Garden City by whipping Baldwin, 17-8. Kimberly Kolodny collected six goals and Nadine Hadnagy added four.

6. (8) Marriotts Ridge (Marriottsville, Md.), 12-0
The Mustangs could finish the regular season undefeated with a win Friday at Atholton (Md.).

7. (9) Century (Sykesville, Md.), 12-1
The Knights came as close to McDonogh as anyone has in their 15-8 loss Monday. They play Thursday at Westminster (Md.).



8. (10) Ward Melville (East Setauket, N.Y.), 12-0
The Patriots claimed a big 12-9 win over Sachem East (N.Y.). They have a key home game Thursday against East Islip (N.Y.).

9. (13) Great Valley (Malvern, Pa.), 13-0
The Patriots routed Inter-Ac League power Notre Dame Academy (Pa.) 18-7 at the Katie Samson Festival as Brittany Edwards scored six goals. They play at 13-1 Henderson (Pa.) Thursday in a Ches-Mont League showdown. Both teams are 7-0 in league play.

10. (7) Garden City (N.Y.), 8-3
The Trojans had a 55-game win streak and now have dropped three of four games. Of course the teams are ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 4, so nobody is about to take this team lightly. They have four top Long Island opponents to finish the season in Farmingdale (Tuesday), Wantagh (Thursday), Mt. Sinai (Saturday) and Manhasset (May 9).

11. (15) Ridgewood (N.J.), 13-1
The Maroons edged Mountain Lakes (N.J.) on Friday, 9-8, as Maggie Carver and Kaitlin Concilio each scored three goals. They now gear for key home games with New Jersey powers Shawnee (Thursday) and Moorestown (May 8).

12. (14) West Genesee (Camillus, N.Y.), 10-1
The Wildcats thrashed Oswego (N.Y.), 17-9. They have a key Section 3 game Friday at 7-2 Baldwinsville (N.Y.).

13. (11) Sacred Heart Academy (Hempstead, N.Y.), 11-1
The Spartans were disappointed with their 19-5 loss to St. Anthony's in the first CHSAA showdown. They'll get another shot at the Friars on May 11.



14. (16) Chatham (N.J.), 10-2
The Cougars have won eight straight games and appear to be peaking for the postseason. They hosted Mountain Lakes (N.J.) on Tuesday.

15. (17) Vero Beach (Fla.), 18-2
The Fighting Indians blitzed Barron Collier (Fla.) in a second-round play-in game, 19-9. Vero Beach was to play in Tuesday's state quarterfinals against Gulf Coast or Fort Myers. Vero Beach, the four-time state champ, has never lost an FHSAA playoff game (20-0) and the win was the Indians' 88th in a row against in-state opponents. Sophomore Katy Pridemore, a University of Florida commit, had five goals for Vero Beach.

16. (19) Georgetown Visitation Prep (Washington, D.C.), 13-1
The Tigers defeated Georgia power Milton, 15-12. They currently have the top seed for the DC Independent Schools League tournament.

17. (20) Guilderland (Guilderland Center, N.Y.), 12-0
The Flying Dutch won their last three games by 14-, 16- and 16-goal differences. They host Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (N.Y.) on Thursday.

18. (21) Bay Shore (N.Y.), 10-1
The Marauders topped Wantagh (N.Y.) on Monday, 10-8, as Caroline Delyra had three goals and four assists. They have a big home game Saturday vs. Shoreham-Wading River.

19. (23) North Shore (Glen Head, N.Y.), 11-1
The Vikings escaped with an 11-10 win over Port Washington (N.Y.). They had a key home game Tuesday with Locust Valley (N.Y.).



20. (25) St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (Alexandria, Va.), 15-3
The Saints routed previously undefeated Garnet Valley 15-5 Saturday at the Katie Samson Festival. Besser Dyson scored six goals and had three assists, while fellow junior Carly Reed posted six goals and one assist. The Saints led 10-3 at halftime.

21. (5) Garnet Valley (Glen Mills, Pa.), 14-1
The Jaguars suffered a big fall after being routed by St. Stephen's and St. Agnes at the Katie Samson Festival, 15-5. They now look to clinch the Central League this week; they only need a win over non-contender Lower Merion on Thursday.

22. (NR) Maryvale Prep (Brooklandville, Md.), 10-3
The Lions claimed the No. 3 spot in the IAAM after clutch wins over Notre Dame Prep, 12-11, and Archbishop Spalding, 15-14. They will open playoff action in the quarterfinals on May 8.

23. (NR) Notre Dame Academy (Worcester, Mass.), 11-0
The Cougars, led by top scorer Alex Dalton, enter the rankings after topping previously undefeated Lincoln Sudbury (Mass.), 14-10. They have a big game Wednesday at Andover (Mass.).

24. (12) Hauppauge (N.Y.), 11-2
The Eagles suffered an 8-6 loss to Eastport-South Manor, a costly loss in Conference 2 action. They host Kings Park (N.Y.) on Friday.

25.(NR) Shawnee (Medford, N.J.), 9-1
The Renegades won three games last week after suffering their first loss of the year to No. 3 Moorestown. They face a major test Friday at Ridgewood.
