Week 7 Storylines
Carl Albert Downs Guthrie; Tulsa Washington Moves to No. 1 in 5A
At the same site where Guthrie proved its worth as a bona fide Class 5A state title contender in 2007, Carl Albert didn’t want lightning to strike twice in its own backyard. The Titans defeated the defending state champions 16-13 on Thursday and move up to No. 2 in the ratings this week, ending Guthrie’s 20-game winning streak and ensuring there will be no unbeaten teams in 5A this season.
Senior Daytawion Lowe, lined up at wide receiver with No. 85 instead of his usual No. 8, caught a 76-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game from junior J.T. Realmuto. Lowe switched back to No. 8 after the play.
Clinging to a 7-6 lead in the third quarter, Realmuto hit Trevonte Porter on a 29-yard scoring strike to give Carl Albert a 13-6 lead. Austin Manger added a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Titans a 16-6 lead. Josh King scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run for Guthrie in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
With Guthrie’s loss, Tulsa Washington moves up to No. 1. Carl Albert is second, with Guthrie checking in at three. Bixby, with two losses, moves up to No. 4. After losing its first two games, Bixby has allowed 20 points in five straight wins. Over the past two games, the Spartans have scored 108 points.
Carl Albert’s Oku Commits
As expected, Carl Albert running back David Oku is planning on attending Tennessee in college.
Two weeks ago following a victory over Shawnee, the then-uncommitted Oku was wearing a Tennessee cap under his helmet. Oku is close friends with Tennessee sophomore receiver Gerald Jones, who hails from Millwood High School in Oklahoma City. Oku has rushed for 749 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Titans this season.
How Good is Class A Commerce?
In a battle of unbeatens last week Commerce pounded Salina, 56-0. The Tigers have given up 19 points all season long and have posted five straight shutouts. Commerce has kept its opponents out of the end zone in six games in its 7-0 start. Not only has Commerce’s defense been stellar, the offense is averaging 50.4 yards per game. And how tough is Class A? Commerce is one of seven unbeatens in Class A and is ranked No. 8 this week.
This and That
Norman North lost its second straight game last week, dropping a 25-21 decision to Del City. Is Norman North in trouble? Not exactly. However, the Timberwolves face No. 5 Edmond Santa Fe in Week 9. Should Norman North lose to the Wolves, it could come down to a Week 10 meeting with Lawton (4-3, 3-1), a team that beat Norman North last year. Watch this space… The information flow was a little beyond the deadline, but it is worth mentioning the Week 6 performance from Locust Grove’s Matt Luetjen. Luetjen rushed for 206 yards and five touchdowns in 42-27 win over Vinita. Luetjen also threw for a touchdown pass to his younger brother Derrick in the victory, which was Locust Grove’s first over Vinita since 1994… In an Independent eight-man shootout, Destiny Christian’s Arthur Mahoney rushed for 352 yards and five touchdowns in a 72-66 win over Community Christian. Mahoney has 2,164 yards and 31 touchdowns this season. Community Christian quarterback Chris Potter completed 28-of-39 passes for 506 yards and seven touchdowns in a losing effort… Jenks made a surprise move in a 63-0 victory over Tulsa Memorial last week. The two-time defending 6A state champions started sophomore Sawyer Kollmorgen at quarterback. Junior Zach Horn started to the first two games and was replaced by junior Beau Marslan in the third quarter of a loss to Tulsa Union. Marslan took over the job for four straight victories, but Kollmorgen got the nod against Tulsa Memorial.
