California upsets jumble volleyball Xcellent 25

La Costa Canyon falls to Redlands East Valley, which then loses to Redondo Union.

Only the California state playoffs will have an effect on the final MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Volleyball National Rankings, but there could be quite a few changes based on what has happened so far in the state regional playoffs.

The regional playoffs began last week with Redlands East Valley knocking off No. 1 seed La Costa Canyon in the first round of the Southern California regional. Redlands East Valley then promptly lost to Redondo Union, which will meet No. 2 seed Long Beach Poly in the finals tonight for a berth in Saturday's state championship match.

La Costa Canyon's loss had to drop the No. 8 Mavericks in the state rankings, but the question was how far. The Mavericks placed second at Durango (to Harvard-Westlake, which made an early exit from the Southern Section playoffs) and they placed second at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. La Costa Canyon also had two wins over La Jolla Country Day, which was ranked No. 14 last week.

Meanwhile Redondo Union had to move up from its No. 41 spot since it defeated Redlands East Valley, a team that had defeated La Costa Canyon. The only reason REV did not enter the rankings is because it had lost the previous week to Marymount in the Southern Section 1A finals and Marymount was ranked No. 46.

Then there was the problem of ranking Presentation of San Jose and St. Francis. Presentation had defeated La Costa Canyon, but lost to La Jolla Country Day. It had also defeated Redondo at the Archbishop Mitty Tournament. St. Francis, meanwhile, had recently defeated Presentation for the Central Coast Section title.

The decision was to move St. Francis to No. 18, followed by Redondo Union, La Costa Canyon, La Jolla Country Day and Presentation. All but La Costa Canyon are still alive in the postseason as of tonight, although St. Francis and Presentation meet in the NorCal Division II finals.

Following is a look at this week's MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Volleyball National Rankings, presented by the Army National Guard:
