Preview: Belfry Pirates vs. Letcher County Central Cougars / Lady Cougars
The Belfry Pirates just played last night, but they'll still head out to face the Letcher County Central Cougars / Lady Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on February 13th. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Belfry sitting on five straight victories and Letcher County Central on four.
Belfry proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 37) but on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Betsy Layne 42-39.
Jaaliyah Warren was her usual excellent self, scoring 14 points along with five steals. Another player making a difference was Jenna Sparks, who scored five points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.
Meanwhile, Letcher County Central put the finishing touches on their eighth blowout victory of the season on Friday. They took their contest on the road with ease, bagging a 75-43 victory over Jenkins. Given Letcher County Central's advantage in MaxPreps' Kentucky basketball rankings (they are ranked 69th, while Jenkins is ranked 226th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Belfry is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-12 record this season. As for Letcher County Central, their win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 19-7.
Belfry came up short against Letcher County Central in their previous meeting last Saturday, falling 65-52. Can Belfry avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
