Baseball Recap: Gates Chili's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

Gates Chili hadn't done well against Penfield recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Spartans came out on top against the Patriots by a score of 8-5. The win was some much needed relief for the Spartans as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.

Gavin Sweeney spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on ten hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jaylen Givens, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Benett Marconi, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.

Gates Chili's victory bumped their record up to 5-8. As for Penfield, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last seven matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-10 record this season.

Gates Chili will welcome Rush-Henrietta at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Royal Comets' pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so the Spartans' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Penfield, they are taking a road trip to face off against Webster Thomas at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Titans will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something the Patriots surely won't give up without a fight.
