Baseball Game Preview: Ashe County Huskies vs. Watauga Pioneers

Ashe County is 1-9 against Watauga since April of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Huskies will head out on the road to face off against the Pioneers at 6:00 p.m. Ashe County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.

Things were looking good for Ashe County after they put the first run on the board on Wednesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Freedom by a score of 5-4. The Huskies have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Gavin Eller made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI.

Meanwhile, Watauga came tearing into Thursday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Fighting Irish 9-2. Nine seems to be a good number for the Pioneers as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Watauga let Jake Blanton and Maddox Greene run wild. Blanton went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Greene went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Watauga is 4-1 when Blanton posts two or more runs, but 9-10 otherwise. Evan Burroughs was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Ashe County's loss dropped their record down to 10-13. As for Watauga, their victory bumped their record up to 13-11.

Ashe County suffered a grim 9-3 defeat to Watauga in their previous matchup last Thursday. Can the Huskies avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
