Baseball Game Preview: Fort Morgan Mustangs vs. The Academy Wildcats

The Fort Morgan Mustangs are taking a road trip to challenge The Academy Wildcats at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Fort Morgan has three straight victories, The Academy has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Fort Morgan proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 11) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over Strasburg. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted since May 2, 2024.

Cooper Chisum spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up six Ks. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Fort Morgan's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Izeiah Ortiz, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run. That's the most RBI Ortiz has posted since back in March. Another was Jadin Carrera, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base.

Meanwhile, The Academy came up short against Prospect Ridge Academy on Wednesday and fell 4-1.

Fort Morgan's victory bumped their record up to 8-9. As for The Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 5-11.

The Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Fort Morgan has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .449.
