Basketball Recap: Deerfield Comes Up Short

Deerfield was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They were outmatched by the Southwestern Heights Mustangs and fell 67-11. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 297th, while the Mustangs are ranked 56th).

Southwestern Heights was led to victory by Juanita Puentes and Layla Pearl Kisner. Puentes made all 7 shots she took for 19 points and eight steals, while Pearl Kisner went 10 of 19 on her way to 22 points and five steals. Pearl Kisner has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 15 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Katelyn Reiss, who posted seven points and five steals.

Deerfield's defeat dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Southwestern Heights, their victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-1.

Deerfield will face off against Stanton County at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Southwestern Heights, they will take on Lakin in a tournament on Thursday. Southwestern Heights is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.3 points per game this season.
