Baseball Recap: Burgin Takes a Loss

Burgin extended their losing streak to six on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-7 in the process. They lost 12-6 to the Fort Knox Eagles. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bulldogs of the 7-3 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2023.

As for Fort Knox, their win ended a seven-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 4-10. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for they considering their one-run performance the game before.

For Fort Knox's part, Evan Castaneda was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Fort Knox is 2-1 when Castaneda allows one or fewer earned runs, but 2-9 otherwise. Castaneda was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Angel Santiago and Gavin Saucedo did most of the damage at the plate: Santiago went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Saucedo got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs. Saucedo is becoming a predictor of Fort Knox's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 1-10 when he doesn't). Ethan Abbott was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Burgin will face off against Berea at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Fort Knox, they will challenge Elizabethtown at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Panthers' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Eagles' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
